The National Housing Development Authority says that 11,000 half-completed houses have been selected for electricity supply under the solar electricity project. These 11,000 houses have been selected from 15 projects implemented by the authority. These projects were implemented between 2015-2019.
Cabinet approval was received for the project of providing electricity to 25,000 low-income houses through solar panels and the relevant Cabinet paper was presented by the minister in charge of the subject, Mr. Prasanna Ranatunga. This project is being implemented as a joint project of the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing and the Ministry of Electricity and Power. It was proposed to select 25,000 half-completed low-income houses and build the respective houses and install solar panels. The project is expected to generate 648 GW of electricity per year. Due to the electricity generation, the annual saving of fuel oil import to Sri Lanka is estimated to be 116.64 million US dollars.
