According to the National Housing Development Authority, the construction work of 1401 houses in 101 villages across the island is currently being done with the help of the Government of India. Under this project, the construction of 661 houses has been completed so far. The authority also states that arrangements have been made to start the construction of another 338 houses immediately.
Out of the 101 villages operating all over the island under the assistance of the Indian government, the construction of houses in 07 villages has been completed and handed over to the people. The villages built under the assistance of the Indian government in the districts of Batticaloa, Jaffna, Gampaha, Kandy, Vavuniya, Badulla and Anuradhapura have been handed over to the people. House construction has been completed in Matale, Kilinochchi and Puttalam villages. The number of houses to be built under this housing project is 2400. Minister in-charge Mr. Prasanna Ranatunga has advised to speed up the construction of the remaining villages.
The Indian Assisted Housing Program operates under several phases. The first project is the housing program covering all 25 districts across the island. There, one model village of 24 houses will be built per district. Under this, 600 houses will be built all over the island.
The second project is the Indian Assisted Housing Program in the Northern Province. 24 model villages will be built covering all the 5 districts of the Northern Province. The total number of houses to be built under it is 600.
The third project is the Indian Assisted Housing Program in the Southern Province. Named Gramashakti House Project, it is being implemented under two phases. The total number of model villages to be constructed is 52. The total number of houses to be built under it is 1,200.
This project is running on the funding provided by the Government of India. The total amount estimated to be spent on this project is 1200 million rupees. About 780 million rupees have already been given out of it. The National Housing Development Authority also states that an amount of 419 million rupees will be received for the houses in the final stage of construction.
Through this program implemented under Indian aid, an assistance amount of Rs. 5 lakhs per beneficiary and Rs. 100,000/= under the treasury provision is given to a total of Rs. 6 lakhs on a non-refundable basis. The Ministry of Urban Development and Housing and the National Housing Development Authority jointly implement this program.
