Steps are being taken to solve the problems related to land deeds in Ampara district. Urban Development and Housing Minister Mr. Prasanna Ranatunga advised the National Housing Development Authority to expedite the issuance of house title deeds for 623 houses in connection with the 18 housing projects implemented in Ampara district.
Houses have been built by the National Housing Development Authority on land owned by the Divisional Secretariats of Ampara District. Ampara District Member of Parliament and Ampara District Coordinating Committee Chairman W. said that the people do not come forward to get the title deeds due to the high value of the title deeds by the Divisional Secretariat. Mr. D. Weerasinghe said.
Therefore, the MP also said that the people demand that the land be taken over by the National Housing Authority and the title deeds be given. He also mentioned that the recently held Ampara District Coordinating Committee approved the transfer of the ownership of those lands to the National Housing Development Authority.
Mr. Prasanna Ranatunga, the Minister of Urban Development and Housing, who spoke at the occasion, said that it is not a problem to give the title deeds promptly after the ownership of the lands currently held by the Divisional Secretariats is transferred to the National Housing Development Authority.
Minister Prasanna Ranatunga said this while participating in the freehold title deeds and housing loan checks under the ``A house for tomorrow'' program held at the Ampara District Secretariat.
Under the leadership of Minister Prasanna Ranatunga, the grant of housing loans worth 18.25 million rupees to 51 beneficiaries and the grant of freehold title deeds to 110 beneficiaries covering 15 housing schemes in Ampara district was done under the leadership of Minister Prasanna Ranatunga.
It is special that the housing title deeds were given to the people of Ampara district after 23 years.
The land issues from 1999 till now were discussed here and solutions to those issues were also given here. Minister Prasanna Ranatunga emphasized that the current government has taken a principled decision to provide title deeds to all. Under that, the Urban Development Authority, Urban Settlement Development Authority, National Housing Development Authority and other institutions under his ministry have already started giving title deeds in relation to housing projects.
The Minister also advised the officials not to oppress the people while giving title deeds.
The General Manager of the National Housing Development Authority, Mr. KA Janaka, said that after transferring the lands owned by the Divisional Secretariats to the National Housing Authority, the title deeds will be given to the people as a free allotment form signed by the President. He also mentioned that the people will have to pay money for the development of public facilities instead of the assessed value.
